Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils, two oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of the throat. The tonsils are part of the body's immune system and help to trap and filter bacteria and viruses. However, sometimes the tonsils themselves can become infected.

Symptoms of tonsillitis

Some of the most common symptoms of tonsillitis include:

  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • Painful blisters or ulcers on the throat
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Ear pain
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Bad breath

  • Stiff neck

How Tonsillitis Affects People

Tonsillitis can make it difficult to eat, drink, and speak. It can also cause fatigue and irritability. In some cases, tonsillitis can lead to complications, such as sleep apnoea and airway obstruction.

Why Do People Get Tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is usually caused by a viral infection, such as the common cold virus or the flu virus. However, it can also be caused by a bacterial infection, such as strep throat.

Who Gets Tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is most common in children, but it can also occur in adults. People with weakened immune systems are more at risk for tonsillitis.

How Is Tonsillitis Diagnosed?

Tonsillitis is typically diagnosed by Mr Khatwa during a physical examination. Mr Khatwa will ask about your symptoms and medical history, and then examine your throat. In some cases, Mr Khatwa may order additional tests, such as a throat swab culture to test for bacteria.

Treatment Options for Tonsillitis

The treatment for tonsillitis will depend on the underlying cause. If tonsillitis is caused by a viral infection, there is no specific treatment. Symptoms can be relieved with over-the-counter pain relievers and fluids. If tonsillitis is caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics will be prescribed.
