Endoscopic examination of the pharynx, also known as pharyngoscopy, is a procedure that uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end to examine the pharynx, or throat. The tube is inserted through the nose or mouth and passed down the back of the throat.

How is endoscopic examination of the pharynx performed?

There are two types of pharyngoscopy: flexible and rigid.

  • Flexible pharyngoscopy is the most common type of pharyngoscopy. It is performed using a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end. The tube is inserted through the nose or mouth and passed down the back of the throat. The patient is usually awake during flexible pharyngoscopy and may feel a gagging sensation as the tube is inserted.
  • Rigid pharyngoscopy is performed using a rigid tube with a camera on the end. The tube is inserted through the mouth and held in place by a mouthpiece. The patient is usually asleep during rigid pharyngoscopy.
